Is the Union Flag or Union Jack the flag of Great Britain as well as the United Kingdom?

    Question #45778. Asked by Linus_337.

Great Britain is an island and doesn't have a flag. The Union Flag is only the Union Jack when on the jackstaff of a ship, and is the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If Northern Ireland splits off and joins the Republic, then Great Britain will have a flag, which in theory will be a modified Union Flag, as the Irish St. Patrick's cross will have to be taken out.

Really? If Northern Ireland unites with the Republic of Ireland will your attractive flag have to be modified?

Strictly, yes. It's made up of the flags of St George (England) - red vertical cross on white ground; St Andrew (Scotland) - white diagonal cross on blue ground; and St Patrick (Ireland) - red diagonal cross on white ground. The original Union Flag of 1707ish didn't have the red diagonal cross in it. Wales isn't in the Union Flag, as it was regarded as part of England at the time.

Great Britain did have a flag when England first joined Scotland in 1606. It combined the Cross of St George (England's flag), with the Cross of St Andrew (Scotland's flag). When Ireland joined the red diagonal lines of the cross of St Patrick were added. In fact, if you watch Pirates of the Carribean starring Jonny Depp, the flag on all the British boats is this original flag without the red diagonal lines of Ireland's Cross of St Patrick (someone at Disney clearly did their homework!)

So I guess if Northern Ireland rejoined Ireland, we'd have to go back to this original flag.
