In general, ownership of land includes
. the subsoil below down to the centre of the earth, but the mineral strata in the subsoil may be sold or leased or otherwise belong to another than the owner of the surface.

Funny you should ask this, as I just went through a situation that proved it's mine as far as I can mine it, pump water out of it, or conversely, have to clean it up should there be a liability to do so. Can't imagine it would be different on your side of the pond. I suppose the Chinese might take exception should I run into them midway, though.
