Armistead Maupin - what does it *really* mean?

    Question #45904. Asked by mibmob.

    Linus_337

This author's name is an anagram of "Is a man I dreamt up". However, he insists that Armistead Maupin is his real name.

Armistead Maupin is the author of Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, Further Tales of the City, Babycakes, Significant Others, Sure of You, and Maybe the Moon.

IS ARMISTEAD MAUPIN YOUR REAL NAME?

Armistead replies. "Damn straight. When I first started writing for the Chronicle, a lot of people thought my name had to be a pseudonym. They would send me exotic anagrams, thinking I'd chosen my name the way Anna had. The anagram myth was further inflamed by a 1990 BBC documentary called `Armistead Maupin Is a Man I Dreamt Up.' Armistead Maupin is - only coincidentally - an anagram for Is a Man I Dreamt Up. Who knew?"
