The village and beach were used as a training ground in preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy. This website has the story and a very nice picture of the area. I hope they moved the locals out before they started their practice!

Yay Maggie!
No, this massive bunker is right in the cliff on the beach well away from the village, so the locals were quite safe. Churchill, Montgomery, Eisenhower and George VI were there watching with their bins. Beautiful pictures here:
