There is a Buddhist legend that diamonds were formed when the powerful warrior king named Baja was sacrificed for the gods. Because he was so pure, his bones became the seeds of gems, after he was burned at the stake.
The Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen to the earth. Stars were believed to be the children of Eos and Astraios.
But, you could also argue that they were created by the Greek god Hephaestus, who was one of the gods of volcanoes and also the blacksmith who created weapons and other metal items for the gods. The Greek words adamastos & adamas (from which the western word "diamond" was derived) refered to the strongest metal that was used to forge the weapons of the gods. Since Hephaestus was the one creating adamas (and other metals) then that means he was in a sense creating "diamonds".
In Hindu mythology, diamonds are created by the god Indra. They are supposed to be the crystallized remains of lightening that he uses as a weapon. The lightening bolt/diamond weapon that he creates is called the Vajra.
