Arnold Palmer had his special day at his 50th Masters, and the tournament will never be the same without him. What qualified Arnie to play in his first Masters win?

Hi Rob...not sure, but I'll take a guess. US Amatuer champion or runner-up. Although, if my memory is correct, at that time all the quarterfinalists from the US Am qualified.
Wow! What a tournament! Hope you got to see some of the good stuff up close...

It was a terrific tourny; better even than most due to the outcome, in my opinion. Phil came to win and it showed. BTW, Arnie qualified by winning the St. Petersburg Open Invitational in March of '58. This was when a win on the PGA tour qualified players for an invite to the Masters. He played in his first Masters ('55) via his win in the US Amateur in 1954, and many don't remember he also won the Canadian Open in '55 as well. You probably had the best seat for viewing, in front of the TV. It gets more hectic out there every year.
