How, when, where and why was it decided that Great Britain's National Day should be the second Saturday in June?

Question #46455. Asked by shady shaker.

    TabbyTom

Despite what it says in the CIA Factbook, I don’t think anyone in the UK regards the second Saturday in June as a “national day.” That day is the sovereign’s official birthday, and is marked by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour at Horse Guards Parade in London.

Several websites date this custom from 1805. As for “why?”, I imagine that our kings and queens want a reasonable chance of decent weather for their ceremonies.

Although the sovereign’s official birthday is not a national holiday, it is a “privilege holiday” for her servants. When civil servants worked a six-day week, they were given the actual day off. Nowadays they get a day off in lieu, which is often tagged on to the Spring Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May.
