    Question #46471. HarrietJPotter asks:

What is the significance of the 12th July in Ireland?

Would it have to do with the modified date that William of Orange defeated James II and VII? (Protestant vs Catholic, resp.)

It's the date of the Battle of the Boyne, so it would seem to be a negative date in Ireland, and possibly positive in Northern Ireland. http://www.irelandseye.com/aarticles/history/events/dates/ch5.shtm
    (probably a gimbiodisim to Robboy)

Orange Day is the name for it. The Orange Lodges go on parades celebrating the victory of King Billy. I remember when I was a kid cycling along a street that was being closed for the parade (the last one to go down it before the parade, in fact), and only realising later why I was getting such dirty looks from the people lining the street. I was only dressed in green, wasn't I? Not a good idea...
