From 7 to 10 February 1879, the England touring team captained by Lord Hawke played New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Officiating as umpires were George Coulthard and Edmund Barton, the future first Prime Minister of Australia. I've not been able to find a report of the match, but remember reading a long time ago that Lord Hawke raised the hackles of partisan home-town barrackers when crack New South Wales batsman W.L.(Billy) Murdoch was adjudged run out by Umpire Coulthard in the New South Wales second innings. If memory serves, Hawke threatened to take his team from the field, but the risk of forfeiting the match led him to abandon that idea.
New South Wales was demolished for 49 runs in that second innings with Emmett producing the handy figures of 28 overs - 23 maidens - 21 runs -5 wickets. If anyone else can throw further light on this match, it would be greatly appreciated.
