Which was the 14th state to become part of the United States of America?

Question #46657. Asked by vpham. (Apr 20 04 3:08 PM)

In 1791, the original 13 colonies faced their first expansion-the addition of Vermont into the Union. While Thomas Jefferson spent only three days in Vermont during a "botanizing excursion," with James Madison in May and June of 1791, his work prior to that trip left a lasting legacy for the Green Mountain State. As United States Secretary of State, Jefferson proved instrumental in bringing Vermont into the Union on March 4, 1791 as the 14th state. http://www.jeffersonlegacy.org/northern-journey.htm

Today 8 states have dependent territories. These 8 states include Australia, Denmark, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1960 there would have been at least one more state on this list. Which state, or states?

What is the largest State in the United States of America?

When people want to insert a state map into text about America in the 1700s, they simply cut out the 13 original states from a contemporary map and use those sizes and shapes. The problem is that the contemporary states don't reflect the states of 1700 America (ie: West Virginia was part of Virginia, the northern border of Pennsylvania and New York was much further north than it is today, etc.) Where can I find maps that show the evolution of the borders of the 13 original colonies during the 1600s and 1700s and how they gradually transformed into their current shapes?
