The Arab and Jewish populations of the area between the Mediterranian and the Jordan River (now split into Israel and the Palestinian Authority) have been in conflict since 1917 when the British conquered the land from the Turks. The Israeli War of Independence started on November 30th 1947. Independence was declared next May, and that day on the Hebrew calendar (which is today, incidentally) was celebrated since as Independence Day.
Since the declaration of independence, there have been five major wars between Israel and surrounding nations - the war of Independence ended in 1949, the "Kadesh Operation" against Egypt in 1956, the Six Day War in 1967, the "Yom Kippur" War in 1973, and the conflict of Lebanon which lasted from 1982 to 2001.
