Among other changes introduced to the game as it went along. In a poem about the game of chess in the 12th century, Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra describes the moves of each piece. The "ministers" (today's queens) were only able to move three spaces in any direction. And what is now the bishop was then the elephant. The poet gives it a very flowery description in Hebrew, laying out the whole game as a battle between Christians (red, for Edomites, with whom he associated Rome) and Muslims (black, Moors). "Sometimes the Edomites have the upper hand in battle... and at other times the Moors will be stronger and the Edomites scatter..."
