An interesting story about a speech given by Stalin to the rump Soviet parliament stated that deputies would stand up constantly to cheer and applaud Stalin's words, and would remain standing, not daring to sit down, lest the dreaded secret police identify them as being less than loyal. One such fit of applause lasted for over 20 minutes--so long that one deputy finally got tired and sat down. Relieved that they were let off the hook, the other deputies immediately sat down as well.
Because of that, a bell was installed to ring after a sufficient length of applause, signaling that they could stop applauding, thereby avoiding the unpleasantness of someone having to stop applauding first.
