Hi Shady. The following is an excerpt from the site on European enlargement listed at the bottom:
Q. 19 Is the introduction of the Euro linked to Enlargement?
A - No. The introduction of the Euro was decided in 1992 before the current enlargement process began. The Euro was launched in 1999 and Euro notes and coins will come into circulation in the twelve participating EU member states (EU 15 minus UK, Sweden & Denmark) on January 1st 2002.
Q. 20 Will the applicant states automatically join the Euro when they join the EU?
A - Any member state of the European Union can apply to join the Single European Currency. Such new member states have to meet certain requirements. It seems likely that new member states will apply to join the Euro as soon as they meet these criteria.
