Each year, smokers worldwide deposit 4.5 trillion cigarette butts.
That's over 8 million every minute.
That's so many that if you stacked them on top of each other, end to end, they would stretch to the moon and back - 150 times.
It's a lose-lose situation. The butts discarded properly end up in landfills, where they... well, where they don't do anything. The cellulose acetate filters are not biodegradable.
The butts flicked onto the sidewalk or street find their way into storm drains, many of them washing into our waterways.
