With reference to horses what is meant by 'tying up'?

Question #47120. Asked by Brinjal. (May 03 04 11:05 PM)

    robboy

It's a muscle problem, similar to a cramp, but more involved than that as it seems to be a seriously debilitating condition.

Of course, it could involve that rail we use to park the critter while we go into the Long Branch Saloon for a sarsaparilla float.

Tying up means to tether your horse or in medical terms it is a common name for the illness Azoturia.

This is when feeders do not feed the horse related to work load and basically muscles break down into the horse's blood stream. Very dangerous and very nasty.

Also known as "monday morning disease."

I really love spending a few minutes scanning the latest questions, and answers, here. I appreciate that the rules ask for a reference to accompany the answer, but should they not also say that any reply should actually give an answer, and not just a reference? I find it a bit peeving to have a reply consisting only of something like - "Here's the reference guys!"

I have read a lot about Wikipedia recently and it often appears as a reference in this forum. What is the history behind this reference source?
