"The total number of islands in Canada has never been established, but it is very large. It is estimated that there are some 30,000 islands along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay alone (the Thirty Thousand Islands)."

I don't understand how the below-linked Wikipedia article about the Baltic Sea answers this question...am I missing something?

It appears the original first reply from Derek has been lost, as mochyn was the person who asked the question. I don't see an answer at the Baltic Sea link, but the second link says:
"Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and islands – 187,888 lakes (larger than 500 m²) and 179,584 islands."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland#Geography
-- so I believe the first answer was Finland.
It would be interesting if we could find an estimate on the total number of Canadian islands.
Also, Caleb above has mis-read his reference for Finland, which is why I prefer a copy & paste from the reference, even when you paraphrase.
His reference actually says:
"Within Finland's borders there are 789 islands of over 1 km2 area. Most of these are inhabited, and with a road connection to the mainland. There are 455 permanently inhabited islands in Finland with no road connection to mainland. Many other islands are used nearly permanently for recreational purposes. Smaller isles number in tens of thousands."
