On a doctor's eye chart, why were those specific letters chosen?

The letters are deliberately chosen but are randomly used.
The shape of the letter determines whether you can see it clearly or not.
eg, C can become an O, Z beomes an S, and M or N become H, etc. when you're guessing - you go by the shape of the letter, not what you are actually seeing.

And I believe they are called Snellen charts after a Dutch ophthalmologist.
