Command Sergeant Majors are in the Army, Master Chief Petty Officers of the Navy, Sergeant Major of the Marines, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. They are all non-commissioned officers and hence obliged to be obedient to the authority of commissioned officers. But woe to the 2nd Lt. who should be so stupid as to prove it.

Sergeant Major of the Army (or Marine Corps, or Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force or Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy) all at grade E-9. These are the spokesmen of the enlisted ranks at the highest levels. A 2nd Lieutenant may actually have authority over them, but would NEVER dream of exercising that authority.
