Which will bounce higher, steel or rubber ball?

    Question #47392. Asked by mehfoos.

    Stew54

From a very hard surface (one which is at least as hard as the steel ball itself) they will rebound equally. From a softer surface the rubber ball will rebound more. From a very soft surface (try a sand dune) neither will rebound at all.

There's quite a good explanation on this page (well better than I could come up with anyway). It's the fourth topic down, answering a question dated January 28 1999.
