In 1748, A guy called Alcubierre heard of this and other discoveries of ancient statues near Torre Annunziata, and began his excavations. Alcubierre discovered the ruins of a temple and wall paintings almost immediately, originally the city was identified as Herculaneum, but it was in fact Pompeii. Alcubierre discovered Pompeii's amphitheater, but he saw no worth while objects and abandoned the site. Alcubierre then stumbled upon a villa, he stripped it of it's frescoes and sculptures, but when he found nothing around the villa he became frustrated, filled his shafts and returned to Herculaneum
