Birthmarks or "nevi" are discolorations due to anomalies in the embryonic development of the skin, especially those affecting the blood vessels of the subcutaneous layer in small or wide areas. They are not thought to be intrauterine pressure marks but the precise cause is unknown. They affect all races and both genders equally. Some disappear as the child grows while some (like Gorbachev's) remain into adulthood. They have descriptive names like "strawberry", "spider" and "port wine stain" and some can be removed surgically.
