He was the Earl of Preston and the sixth Governor General of Canada.
On March 18, 1892 Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered a message to a meeting of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association.
It was on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston, the sixth Governor General of Canada, who suggested the need for a trophy for hockey. He later purchased a cup for that purpose.
