    What country sold Alaska to the United States?

    		Tsar Alexander ll of Russia approved the sale of Alaska. It was Imperial Russia, circa 1867. The Soviet Union wasn't even a twinkle in anyone's eyes.

    		Alaska was bought by the USA at the behest of US Secretary of State, William Seward, in 1867 for the now legendary cost of 2 cents an acre. While people didn't realise Alaska's mineral wealth it was known as Seward's Folly.
    The Soviet Union came into being under Lenin in 1922 so at the time of purchase, Russia was not part of the USSR.
    Alaska did later become the 49th state in 1959, just before Hawaii was made the 50th.
