How far behind America is Australia in terms of time zones?

If Greenwich is Zero, eastern Australia is +12 hours and Western USA is –8 hours The difference is 20 hours. If you consider Hawaii or Alaska the difference is 22 hours. Both Australia and the US have different time zones across their respective countries, so there will be many answers to the question, depending upon which states you compare between the two countries.
