An aquifer is a underground body of water, they are generally classified as major or minor aquifers. 81% of Texas' land has some type of aquifer under it.

Generally aquifers are contained in permeable rock between two layers of impermeable rock. These can contain vast quantities of fresh water, often dating back to prehistoric times. The main aquifer rlaj is probably referring to is the Ogalalla Aquifer, which has been severely drawn down over the past century due to the numerous wells drilled to supply irrigation for farming and potable water for the rapidly expanding population in that region.
