Not sure on the derivation, but I am pretty certain it means a glass of whisky.

More correctly spelt 'deoch-an-doruis' (the deoch is pronounced approximately 'joch' rhymes with loch). Means a drink at the door. Equivalent to a stirrup cup if you've got an 'orse. In the Harry Lauder song, the 'but and ben' is a two roomed cottage (ah, luxury!), the but being the outer room (kitchen, etc) and the ben the inner (bedroom, etc). A lot of cottages had only one room - kitchen, bedroom, etc (and the pig too for warmth).
