    Spain and Portugal in 1494. It was an agreement dividing up the new world into two spheres of influence with an imaginary line down the middle, and which explains why it is Portuguese not Spanish that is spoken in Brazil. In the Treaty of Zaragoza (1529), the demarcation line was extended through both poles and encompassed the entire world.
