asks:
I've heard of the Boeing 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767 and the newer 777's. Why do we hear so little about the Boeing 717?

The Boeing 717 has been 2 planes over the recent years. In 1998, after the Boeing-McDonnell/Douglas merger, the Boeing 717 is meant to be the evolution of the DC-9.
The first use of the designation Boeing 717 was the military transport/military tanker designed by Boeing, known in the military as the C-135 and the KC-135.
