I've heard of the Boeing 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767 and the newer 777's. Why do we hear so little about the Boeing 717?

Why is a Boeing 707 called a 707? Buffalos don't have wings...so why do they called the little spicy chicken drums and wings this? The 700 series of Boeing aircraft runs the gamut from 707 through 777, so why is the 717 never mentioned in connection with passenger carriers? I seem to recall many stories in the news about 30 or so years ago about spontaneous human combustion. Whatever happened to spontaneous human combustion? Why don't we hear about it anymore?
