Noah Swayne, who served from 1862-1881 did not attend college, and read the law with an attorney in Virginia.

    Close, but no cigar!

Robert H. Jackson who served from 1941-1954! I didn't expect to find a mid-20th century justice who hadn't completed at least undergraduate college.

Excellent, pbombard! That is why I asked the question. Despite his lack of formal education, Jackson is considered to be in line behind O.W. Holmes and B. Cardozo in the literacy and lucidity of his opinions. If you are interested, I don't think Hugo Black had much education either, he was a Justice of the Peace in Alabama!
