Can anyone tell me of the origin of the word "Blighty" and why the English use it sometimes to refer to England?

It is old Army slang originally, coming from the Hindi for "foreign" which I think is 'bilayati' though doubtless one of our Indian members will tell me that this is a terrible transliteration!
