    		Well, for starters, the Monitor and the Merimac were the first steel or ironclad gunboats. I think it was about this time people started to drop ordnance from hot air balloons, so it was kinda the beginning of air warfare.

    		Although the submarine had been invented much earlier, it was used effectively for the first time by the Confederates via the CSS Hunley.
