Wasn't it Peter Bergman as Dr. Cliff Warner from "All My Children"? It was a 1986 commercial for a cough syrup.
January - A Vicks Formula 44 ad premieres, starring Peter Bergman from All My Children, in which he told the viewing audience "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV." This phrase, first used in the early 1970s by Robert Young of Marcus Welby, M.D. fame, was subsequently parodied in many pop culture references.

Before Cliff it was Dr. Larry (Michael Storm) from One Life to Live and it was a headache medicine, either Tylenol or Excedrin.
