I'm not sure if Lincoln could be considered a third-party candidate in that race, since the Democratic party (which had split that year) and Republican party were by then the two main players. The closest I can find is 1912, where Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose party finished second to Woodrow Wilson (with Taft, the encumbent, in third). Jun 21 04, 12:51 AM
