In the 18th November charts of 1978 at No. 10 was 'Blame it on the Boogie' by the Jacksons and Mick Jackson's version at No. 32

Sounds good SM (unless I find a later example).
Haven't things changed a lot since the 50s, when almost every big song had three or four artists competing to take it up the charts?

Back in the early days of the charts, the rating was by sales of sheet music, not records. (Yes, sheet music! Do they even publish the stuff that's in the charts now?) So, the more people that recorded a number, the more people would hear it and buy the music. And so on... Back then, with no discos, the local performers needed the music to keep in tune with the latest trends and keep their audiences and dancers.
