    		Providing advance warning of speed traps! Not radar in those days, but a Plod lurking behind a hedge with a bike at the ready to chase the offender.

    		Yay, Baloo! I heard someone talking about this on the radio tonight, as the AA is apparently up for sale.
    They said, after the police complained about their tip offs to motorists, that they wouldn't actually tell anyone about the traps, but told their members that if the patrolmen DIDN'T salute them, then they would know a speed trapper was lurking close by.
