So the question is really a matter of why cows lactate all year round regardless of whether they are calving?
I am told that this is because artificially milking a cow gives it the impression it is being weaned, causing it to continue to produce milk. Maybe if a lactating woman was artificially suckled all year round, she would do the same. Now there would be a bizarre experiment!

Because the tubes on the milking machine will not fit on our nipples.

I had a neighbour who shall be nameless, who fed her child until he was 4 years old, causing her husband to comment that she would be putting her breast through the school fence at play lunch. She was still producing milk after 4 years. Suckling causes the uterus to contract and is also a natural contraceptive.
