    Why is it that it's called the World Series if only the United States can be in it?

    Not knowing much about sport - especially American sports - I usually avoid these questions. But here I go... It's not World as in Planet Earth, but rather to do with some early sponsor of the event. Can't remember who, but it would be someone like the World Corporation or something like that. Anyway, I thought Japan and South Korea took part in it nowadays?

    apparently they were projecting to the future when they hoped other countries would join in. As the answers show, this has taken some time since 1903 when it became official, and we in England still refer to baseball as 'men who play rounders' (not a bad game as it happens).
