    My calendar states that 21st June is the first day of summer. My diary says that 21st June is mid-summer's day. How can it be both?

    		As I understand it, in the civil calendar summer (in the Northern Hemisphere at least) is June, July and August, whilst in the astronomical calendar, it runs from summer solstice (June 21st or 22nd) to autumnal equinox (September 23rd/24th).

    Your diary is unusual in that Midsummer's Day is usually given as June 24th, representing when the summer solstice occurred about 2000 years ago. This is thought to be when these ceremonies were first held. I think "Mid" here refers to summer being at its peak rather than being the exact centre of the period.
