When vice-president Spiro Agnew (under Nixon) was forced to resign the office because of impending legal action, no one assumed the office automatically. Nixon chose a new VP (Ford), who was confirmed by the Senate. The house speaker is third in line in the event of the death or incapacitation of both the president and vice-president.
