According to Brewer's Dictionary of Names, the name means what it says and the cold country was so named in 982 by the Norse navigator Eric the Red to attract settlers.

Greenland in Eric the Red's day was actually a nice place, really green and unsettled. But not long after there began a period of global cooling and then the island became covered with ice and tundra - the Greenland we know today. Since the only people in Greenland were originally from Bergen (Norway), they gave up trying to settle the cold Greenland and stayed in Norway. Greenland used to be the major stop for the Vikings between Bergen and Vinland.
