As no two sports are the same, I suppose you can go with longest unbeaten run. I don't know about any others, but Arsenal's total season's 38 league games in a row last season without losing has to come near the top (ugh!).

The U.S.A. held the America's Cup yachting trophy for 132 years, from 1861 until 1983. An Australian boat won it from them to end their streak. See: http://www.wordiq.com/definition/America's_Cup
They regained it in 1987, but lost it to New Zealand in 1995, who in turn lost it to a Swiss syndicate in 2003.

A Yay to RogerWnz1. That was the answer I was looking for.

Exactly. The question as I posted it is in the same wording as it was given at my monthly trivia meeting. I was the only one who thought it was the America's Cup.

Was the America's cup always contested between nations over this period, or were multiple US entrants allowed.
Arsenal's great run is not technically a winning streak. I would throw up Australian Cricket side's 16 consecutive test victories spanning two years, not interrupted by a draw, which blew the previous record out of the water.

If the question does not have a definitive answer, why has it been answered correctly by two different people?

No I don't. I got it correct in my trivia meeting. AND RogerW1nz got it correct here. Two different people with the EXACT same answer in two different places.
