    in my opinion

James had directed that an aperture in the place where he had concealed himself, and by which he might have escaped, should be built up, as the balls with which he played at tennis in the court yard were apt to be lost in it.

Well, in my opinion, you are correct. Yay! He blocked up the drain so as not to lose his balls, but he ended up losing his life.
