Why did the NBA add the Charlotte Bobcats to the league?

They added the Bobcats so the playoffs could be smaller. Now there are six divisions with five teams. The winner of each division goes into the playoffs, plus one wild card from the east and one from the west. Also, Charlotte's former team, the Hornets, were given to New Orleans, so Charlotte needed a new one.

When the Hornets left Charlotte for New Orleans, the NBA was anxious to reintroduce pro basketball to the market. Until relations fell apart over the issue of a new arena, the Hornets were among the league's most successful teams in terms of both attendance and merchandise sales. Additionally, Charlotte is in Basketball Country. College basketball has always been popular in the region, and the NBA wanted to capitalize on the fever.
