Why is George W. Bush often referred to as "Dubya"?

During the 2000 campaign Pres. Bush would often raise his arms over his head, put up three fingers to form the "W" and chant "Dubya, Dubya, Dubya" (Texas drawl for W).
The press, media and comedians took off with "Dubya" and it has stuck.
