I don't know about bandleaders but in 1938, a US eccentric called Jim Moran set out to disprove some English similes.
Firstly he sold fridges to the Eskimos (sorry, Inuit). He then had 50 tons of hay dumped in Washington DC and asked someone to bury a needle in it.
After 8 hours and 32 minutes he found it.
The following year, he took a bull into a New York china shop. It was there for an hour and broke two plates.
