The marathon at the Olympic games - he stopped for a Big Mac and french fries which cost him the race, actually it was the thick milk shake that undid him. He spent so much breath sucking that straw that it left him breathless.

With mochyn's massive clue I found him, Maggie, though the report I found referred to a race in 1901, in Boston I think. Ronald McDonald was an early marathon runner, who was "nobbled" in one race by being handed a sponge to drink from by an apparent well-wisher in the crowd, but which had been laced with chloroform. He fell ill at once and dropped from the front to the back of the field.

The race was marked with another unusual moment when a horse joined the race somewhere between Natick and Wellesley.
There are two different versions of what happened to McDonald. The first, provided by McDonald's attending physician claimed the sponge was infused with chloroform. Dr. Thompson ruled out an accident because of the huge sum of money staked on the race. The second, levelled by McDonald's trainer John Bowles, accused Thompson of giving McDonald some pills, that were supposed to stimulate him, when he became exhausted. Bowles claimed the doctor fabricated his conspiracy story after realizing the pills had the opposite effect.

He was the last of 7 runners. He and George Orton complained that the top 3 runners, all French, took a few short cuts through the back streets which explained why they looked relatively rested.
