    Most of the states of the United States were ex-British colonies, ex-Spanish colonies or ex-Native American territories. Which three were independent states immediately before joining the Union?

    		Texas and Hawaii, but I don't know of a third.

    		California was an independent republic.

    		Texas was a republic for a few years, and Hawaii was a kingdom. What a lot of people don't know is that California was a republic for one month before joining the Union. Still says Republic of California on the flag, even. Flag's lasted a lot longer than the republic.
