In the Old Testament, why did Jael kill Sisera by driving a nail through his head?

I assumed it was because she had decided the Israelites were winning, so she had better not be caught sheltering their enemy in her tent. Or were you particularly thinking of why she used a hammer and nail rather than any implement to do the business? That I don't know.

That sounds good, Stew. I have just read a quiz in here that says it was a tent peg which makes more sense. I had never heard the story until it became the centre of the crime drama "Waking the Dead" last night.
Doesn't the Old Testament have some pleasant little tales in it?

Oh yes, those were the days all right. It's always worth reading a few chapters of Judges if you're feeling hard done to. Puts the average bad day at the office into perspective!

Also, she was married, and would have rathered be caught killing a man than in a compromising position with him.
For some pleasant stories, you should read the last chapter of Job or the beginnings of Daniel and Ezra.

The story of Elisha and the bears is a good one too... I thought Jael went to Sisera'a tent with the idea of seducing him and then making sure that no-one else ever would. What puzzles me is how she managed it without waking him up. Not all that easy to drive a nail through a skull in one blow. Or a tent peg, which is usually blunter.

Tent pegs are stronger though. A tent peg could do far more damage to a victim than nails. Jael didn't go to Sisera - he went to her, thinking she was on his side.
