At one time it was Lake Volta which is 400km long with an area of 8480 sq km (about 3700 sq miles). This lake behind the Akosombo Dam covers over two-thirds of Ghana.
Wikpedia claims this is the "second largest man-made lake in the world" but doesn't say what the largest is.
Annoyingly, googling the phrase "the largest man-made lake in the world" leads to sites about various lakes in China, USA, Russia, etc.

As the lake behind the Owen Falls Dam is actually Lake Victoria, I'm not sure we can really call that a man-made lake!

Discovery channel says the largest man made lake will soon be a lake impounded by the Three Gorges Dam. Official name of the lake was at that time was yet to be decided. If I weren't so tired right now I would Ask Jeeves. Perhaps tomorrow. Whatever the name, it's in China.

Hold It! Buck is correct. Owen Falls apparently is the winner. Appologies to all for my faux pas. Should't surprise anyone that I could come up with an incorrect response, check out my pathetic scores.

Can't be Lake Victoria. It was discovered in 1858. I'm sure Mr. McGruff will give us the correct response in due time.
